TED Genel Merkezi öncülüğünde yürütülen ve TED Kocaeli Koleji ‘inde yaklaşık iki yıldır sürdürülen ‘Access-8 Projesi’ çerçevesinde, öğrencilerin öğrenmiş oldukları İngilizceyi farklı ortamlarda kullanmalarına olanak sağlamak amacı Access-8 projesini yürüten öğretmenlerin önderliğinde okul dışında geziler ve sosyal sorumluluk çalışmaları düzenlendi.
Türk Eğitim Derneği ve Amerikan Büyükelçiliği’nin kendi olanaklarıyla yeterli İngilizce eğitimi alamayan öğrenciler için el ele vererek gerçekleştirdiği “Access Sosyal Sorumluluk Projesi, ülkemizdeki İngilizce dil eğitimine katkıda bulunmak amacıyla hazırlanmış olan bir burs programıdır. Katılan öğrenciler farklı TED okullarında 360 saat İngilizce dil eğitimini tamamlamaktadırlar.
Mart 2017 tarihinden bu yana TED Kocaeli Koleji İngilizce öğretmenlerinden Türkan Yaman ve Burcu Pehlivan tarafından yürütülen Access-8 projesi olan derslerin sona ermesine sayılı günler kala öğrencilerin dil becerilerini geliştirmeye yönelik müfredat dışı ‘pekiştirme faaliyetleri’ ve toplum hizmeti etkinliği gerçekleştirildi.
Birinci pekiştirme faaliyeti kapsamında,9 Nisan 2018 tarihinde öğrenciler iki takım olarak bowling oynamışlardır. Oyun öncesi öğrencilere bowling oyununa ait farklı terimler öğretilmiş ve oyun sırasında bu terimleri kullanmaları sağlanmıştır. Oyun sonrası öğrenciler ile yemek yenmiş ve tüm süreçlerde İngilizce iletişim kurulmuştur. Öğrenciler daha sonraki bir aşamada gün boyunca yapmış oldukları aktiviteleri daha sonra paragraf olarak yazmışlardır.
21 Nisan 2018 tarihinde ise ikinci pekiştirme faaliyetinde ise öğrenciler ile bir doğa yürüyüşü gerçekleştirdi. Yuvacık barajı çevresinde gerçekleştirilen yürüyüş sırasında öğrenciler bitki ve ağaç çeşitliğine yönelik kelimeleri ve kavramları İngilizce olarak öğrenme ve pratik yapma şansı elde ettiler. Yürüyüş sonrası Wellborn Otelde yenilen yemek ile gün sona erdi.
Access-8 öğrencileri ile 11 Nisan 2018 tarihinde bir ‘Toplum Hizmeti’ gerçekleştirildi. Öğrenciler almış oldukları kedi ve köpek maması ile Başiskele sahiline gittiler. Bölgede bulunan sokak hayvanlarına mama ve su bırakan öğrenciler, ayrıca alanın temizlenmesine de katkıda bulundular. Bunun yanı sıra TED Kocaeli Koleji civarındaki sokak hayvanlarının bakımını üstlenen kişilere de mama bağışlanmış ve hayvanların bakımı ile ilgili bilgi edindiler. Öğrenciler, toplum hizmetinin tamamlanmasının ardından çekmiş oldukları fotoğraflar ve kendilerinin oluşturduğu bir slogan ile çevre bilincini geliştirmeye yönelik dijital ortamda birer poster tasarladılar. Bu posterler daha sonra öğrencilerin eğitim gördükleri okullarda sergilendi.
5-6 Mayıs 2018 tarihlerinde öğrenciler Wellborn Otel’de gün boyunca İngilizcenin kullanımını temel alan etkinliklere katıldılar. Etkinlikler ve çalıştaylar öncelikle öğrencilerin iş birliği yapma, problem çözme ve iletişim gibi yaşam becerilerini geliştirmelerine yönelik planlandı. Öğrenciler, okuma, yazma, yaratıcı öykü yazma ve anlatma gibi etkinlikleri gerçekleştirirken unutamayacakları, keyifli vakit geçirdiler.
Öğrenciler, öğretmenleri eşliğinde, 6 Mayıs 2018 günü Değirmendere’de yer alan Saraylı ve Örcün köyleri ziyaret ettiler. Öğrenciler, gezi sırasında çektikleri fotoğraflar ile katıldığı bir yarışma düzenledi ve oylama ile en güzel üç kare seçildi.
İki gün süren çalıştaylar ve gezi sonunda öğrenciler ‘Access hayatımı nasıl değiştirdi?’ konulu birer makale yazarak proje sürecini ve almış oldukları İngilizce eğitimin kendi hayatları için ne anlama geldiğini ifade etme olanağı buldular.
