Haldun Taner’in 1964 yılında kabare tarzında yazdığı “Gözlerimi Kaparım Vazifemi Yaparım”, Vicdani ile Efruz isimli iki arkadaşın II. Meşrutiyet’in ilan edildiği 1908’den 1960’lı yıllara kadar geçen serüvenini konu ediyor.
Vicdani ve Efruz hayat yolculuğunda hepimizin rastladığı iki zıt prototip. Vicdani; dürüst, çalışkan, ahlaklı, iyi niyetli, naif, “vicdanlı”. Efruz ise her devirde yolunu bulan, yanardöner, ahlaksız, çıkarı uğruna “babasını bile satan” biri.
Oyun iki farklı karakterin serüvenini doğumdan ele alıp okul, iş hayatı, evlilik ve ileri yaşa dek götürüyor. Vicdani ve Efruz’un kimi zaman ayrı kimi zaman birbiriyle çakışan hayatlarını izlerken bir yandan da II. Meşrutiyet Dönemine, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun yıkılışına, yeni Cumhuriyet’in kuruluşuna, I. ve II. Dünya Savaşlarına ve genç Türkiye’de 1950’li yılların siyasi ve toplumsal gelişmelerine tanıklık ediyoruz.

‘Gözlerimi Kaparım Vazifemi Yaparım’, ‘Keşanlı Ali Destanı’ ve ‘Ayışığında Şamata’ gibi başyapıt eserlerin bulunduğu birçok tiyatro oyunu, öykü ve kitabın yazarlığını yapan, ölümünün üzerinden 29 yıl geçtikten sonra bile 100. doğum günü kutlanan, ölümsüz bir edebiyatçı, yazar, örnek, güzel bir insan.
Yazdığı skeçlerle Edebiyat yaşamına gençlik yıllarında başlayan; ‘Töhmet’ adlı ilk öyküsü Yedigün dergisinde Haldun Yağcıoğlu takma adıyla yayınlanan Haldun Taner, New York Herald Tribune Gazetesi’nin 1953’te İstanbul’da düzenlediği öykü yarışmasında ‘Şişhaneye Yağmur Yağıyordu’ öyküsüyle birinci oluyor. Ve birkaç yıl sonra 1956’da Varlık Dergisi’nin araştırmasında yılın en beğenilen öykücüsü seçiliyor.
Asistanlığı bırakıp Viyana’ya tiyatro bilimi eğitimi için gidiyor ve 1955 ila 1957 yılları arasında Max Reinhardt Tiyatro Akademisi’nde öğrenim görüyor. Haldun Taner, 1950’li yıllarda İstanbul Üniversitesi’nde Tiyatro Bilim dalının kurulması için çalışıyor, sonuç alamasa da yoğun uğraşlar veriyor; özellikle tiyatronun bir bilim dalı olduğunu ve üniversitelerde tiyatro bilimi eğitiminin verilmesi gerektiğini ilk kez dillendiriyor.
1950’lerde oyun yazmaya başlayan sonrasında tiyatrodaki ilk eserlerinde dramatik türün başarılı örneklerini veren Haldun Taner, ardından epik tiyatro denemelerine girerek Türk Tiyatrosu’ndaki ilk epik tiyatro örneği olan ‘Keşanlı Ali Destanı’ adlı oyunu ile dünya çapında tanınıyor.
